How to Create a Blog Post in WordPress

Posted on | July 10, 2009 | No Comments

Posts are the entries that will make up your blog, each self-contained, like a newspaper article. The sum of your posts make up the content of your blog

To start,

  1. Log in to your blog. For instructions on how to log in, click here.
  2. Click the “Posts” tab on the left
  3. Click the “Add New” subtab under posts

This will bring you to the “Add New Post” page. This is how you add content to your blog through writing posts. There are several fields you need to fill in.

  1. The Post Title – This will show up at the top of each post, in the title bar of your browser, and is used to identify a subject for the post. I typed “How To Create a Blog Post in WordPress” as the title of this post because that is a good description of what the post will be about. It is in the center of the page and is the first box you can fill in.
  2. The Post Content – This is where the “meat” of the post will go. I am typing the text of this tutorial into the post content box. It is in the center of the page, just under the title field.
  3. Tags – Tags are little pieces of text which describe what ideas are contained inside the post. For this post, I have used: WordPress, Post, Title, Content, Tags, and Categories to write an abridged copy of all the info contained in the post. Enter them in the “Post Tags” section on the right of the page and click “Add.”
  4. Categories – Categories are the overarching descriptors of the post. For this post, I used Wordpress and Posts as categories because that is what this post is really focused on. Select preexisting Categories in the “Categories” section on the right of the page or add new ones by entering them into the text field in the same box and pushing “Add.”
    • N.B. The distinction between tags and categories is thin and highly debated. To learn more about the difference, click here.
  5. Publish – The final step is to publish the post. You can do this by pushing the “Publish” button on the right side of the page. This makes the post appear on your blog homepage and symbolizes that the post is complete.
